How high (or low) should I cut my grass?

In the spring and summer, set your mower to its highest cutting position. That will encourage your grass to grow thick and produce deeper roots, which helps to crowd out weeds. In the fall, set your mower 1″ or 2″ lower. Shorter grass prevents leaves from matting down your lawn.

How often should I mow?

Mowing depends upon the condition of your yard. In general, you want your grass to maintain a height of 4 inches.

When should I fertilize my yard?

It’s best to fertilize your lawn at least twice a year: once in the spring and once in the fall. In the spring, wait until you can see the grass is actively growing. In the fall, feed your lawn no later than six weeks before you expect the first frost. If your lawn is showing signs of slow growth or brown spots, you should contact a specialist.

How often should I water my yard?

A well conditioned lawn only requires about 1″ of water per week.

How deep should I water my yard?

A good healthy lawn only needs about 1″ of water per day. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid evaporation.

Is it OK to mow a wet yard?

You should avoid mowing a wet lawn. The mower tends to mat down your grass and cause ruts. Plus the earth is not strong enough to hold the grass roots which could cause a root disturbance.

Which is better for watering a lawn: an oscillator, pulsating, or whirling sprinkler?

Each type of sprinkler head has it own specialized system of watering. The sprinkler you use will depend upon what you want to accomplish. A pulsating sprinkler is good for large areas, oscillator and whirling sprinklers are gentle with even watering which is good for flowers. Nowadays, sprinklers have settings which can control the water flow and help you achieve your purpose.
